We were commissioned by the Catton Heritage & Preservation Society in East Yorkshire to restore and re-purpose their K6 Telephone Box
More Product InformationWe were fortunate to be entrusted with the restoration and repurposing of the derelict phone box in the village of Low Catton in East Yorkshire.
As you will see, our box was in a pretty parlous state. Many of these, locally, had been lovingly restored by local volunteers, giving a great many hours to the project. Some have become defibrillator housings, others book exchanges: we wished ours to be an information centre and museum as it tied in perfectly with the restoration project on the land at the head of which it stands.
>We decided to get a full council grant for this, but there are many other routes down which one can go for funding. Having obtained a quote from British Bits for the project which included the flexibility for what we would, between ourselves and Jason, their principal, decide was best for our purposes, we agreed to have the phone box removed to their headquarters in Lincolnshire.
While the box was away, we were kept updated as to progress and consulted whenever decisions needed to be made about layout, door orientation (we had it converted from its original layout where the phone was on the right after entry to one where the door is directly opposite – essential for our purposes with display cases inside) and so on. You have to have faith in the work that is being done as much of it looks pretty drastic
You could, of course, choose to have a replacement box installed in place of your own. It might be cheaper and less stressful, but the satisfaction of knowing that you have rescued something so iconic from a sad state and had it restored to a useful new life where it will be appreciated by your community is immeasurable. We are now being consulted by other local councils and organisations who are encouraged by the result, especially as we appeared on national TV. Some of the others may well be excellent, but this guy has done it all and I never doubted the result. Was all the effort worth it? We think so.
